Always First

We have many traditions at my house for Christmas. There is one that is most special to me. I have my dad's ornament that we made for him when we were kids. It is the simplest of ornaments. A glass bulb that we wrote his name with Elmer's glue and covered with glitter. He loved it and so do I. When my mom remarried, she didn't feel it was right to put it on her tree and I said I would be thrilled to put it on mine. So, every year when we put up the tree, my dad's ornament is always first to go on the tree and I'm the one to put it there. It is a very simple tradition, but one that means so much to me. Dad has been gone for 32 years but somehow, the simple task of putting his ornament on my tree makes me feel like he is closer. I love the feeling. I love you dad and I miss you so much!

  1. Aw, that is such a beautiful tradition! As you know, I lost my dad too and Christmas is always a special time (because he loved it so...) and a hard time (because I miss him so...).

    Merry Christmas!

  3. What a special post. I love this tradition. A very special ornament indeed! I really need to count my blessings more often to still have my dad around.

  5. I cried when I read this post, Nancy. It made me so happy that you have this most most most precious memory and the tangible ornament to touch and tell the story to your children and grandchildren. Your Dad still is there... shining from your tree. I have a tree topper angel that my Dad "rescued" from a bargain table and brought home and fixed so she lit up the top of our Christmas trees. I love her. I know just how you feel... and I thank God every day for having such beautiful memories of such a wonderful man. I will be thinking of YOUR Dad and mine all day!!! Thanks, Nancy, for this beautiful post!!

  6. Very beautiful and touching. My brother gave me two memorial ornaments this year for my mom and dad and I love them! I think I'll start making them the first on the tree when we move into the Christmas house every year.

  7. OH! Nancy! What a special ornament and tradition. I miss my mom so much and love all the handcrafted (crochet snowflakes and angels...and so many others) that she has made and our tree holds them all! We surely miss Dave's parents as well and we are blessed to also have Dave's mom's handcrafted ornaments.

    Blessings & Aloha!
